Teen CERT: Connecting School Emergency Management and Youth Preparedness

The Teen CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program educates students about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills. Using the” Scientific Method” to solve problems and using hands-on training, Teen CERT members are prepared to help themselves, their families and their school during a major disaster when professional responders are delayed or not readily available. Teen CERT empowers students with decision-making and problem solving skills and strategies to help them make informed decisions regarding prevention-mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery strategies to reduce loss of life & property. Students learn the significance of working as a team to improve safety and increase their effectiveness when responding to disasters.

This one-and-a-half (1.5) hour webinar focused on Teen CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and the development and implementation of Teen CERT at the K-12 school-level. While this webinar was designed for schools and school districts, it is important to note that Teen CERT is intended for high school students in grades 9-12 only.

This webinar was presented by our colleagues Rachel Jacky, the Director of the National CERT Program, Individual and Community Preparedness Division, FEMA, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Sue Graves, Safety Coordinator for the Lincoln County School District in Newport, Oregon.

This webinar covered the relationship between school emergency management, youth preparedness, and Teen CERT. Specifically, it addressed the importance and benefits of Teen CERT programs, the key components of developing and implementing a Teen CERT plan in high schools, and creating credibility among high school students and adults.
